Why Confirming Pregnancy and Gestational Age is Crucial

Legalities and local accessibility

Abortion access is not equally available worldwide. In some countries and territories, abortion access is permitted but limited by gestational age, and some methods are only available during certain weeks of pregnancy.

It's Important to Use a Reliable Pregnancy Test.

Although a missed period is often a sign of pregnancy, other factors, besides pregnancy, can cause your period to be late or missed. That's why you should confirm a pregnancy with a reliable pregnancy test before using the pregnancy calculator. A home pregnancy test or a visit to your health-care provider can give you the accurate information you need.

If you're having trouble remembering when your last period was or haven't been keeping track, here are some tips to help you figure it out:

- Try to remember what was happening when you last had your period. Were there any special events or trips around that time?

- Ask yourself questions such as, "Where was I?" or "Who was I with?"

- Look at old calendars or notes – you might have written down your period dates.

- If you're comfortable, ask friends or family if they remember when you mentioned your period.

- Check old photos or social media posts from around that time.

You should not use abortion pills if you haven't confirmed the pregnancy with a reliable test and don't know how far along the pregnancy is.

Calculate How Far Along Your Pregnancy Is

To calculate how many weeks a pregnancy is, count the number of weeks and days from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). It's important to start counting from that day because it helps estimate when the egg was released and fertilized.

The best way to figure out how far along a pregnancy is:

know the exact date your last period started;

estimate a close-enough date if you don't remember the exact day of your LMP; and

use another method if you can't recall the month or whether it was at the beginning or end of the month.

Be careful with some of these common mistakes; do NOT calculate by

counting from when you missed your period;

counting from the day of sexual intercourse; and

counting from the day you think you became pregnant.

Choosing Abortion Methods According to Gestational Age

0

There are several safe ways to have an abortion, and the method you choose usually depends on how many weeks the pregnancy is. Sometimes, different methods can be used at similar times in a pregnancy. Your choice might also be affected by where you live, what equipment or resources are available, and what you prefer or your doctor recommends.

Different abortion methods are available depending on the gestational age:

Medical Abortion (MA)

An abortion with pills or a medical abortion (MA) can be safely done at home below 13 weeks of pregnancy. For pregnancies more than 13 weeks, special attention and precautions are needed, and it is recommended that the abortion be done in a medical facility.

Manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) is a form of uterine aspiration typically used up to 14 weeks of gestation. A trained health-care professional performs it at a clinic or medical center.

Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)

Dilation and evacuation (D&E) methods are commonly used beyond 14 weeks' gestation. A qualified medical person does it at a clinic or health facility.

Induction Abortion

Induction abortion, when used, is typically done for pregnancies beyond 16 weeks' gestation by a skilled health-care worker at a clinic or hospital.

Dilation and Curettage (D&C)

Dilation and curettage (D&C) is an outdated method of abortion and has largely been replaced by methods of uterine aspiration (MVA/EVA) and dilation and evacuation (1)(5). Even though this procedure is still performed worldwide, we highly recommend using safer methods.

Frequently Asked Questions on Pregnancy Calculator

A pregnancy calculator can provide a helpful estimate of how far along you are, but it's not always exact. It works best when you input accurate information, such as the first day of your last menstrual period. If your periods are irregular or you're unsure of the dates, the results may be less reliable. Still, it can give you a general idea of how far along your pregnancy is, which can help guide you toward appropriate abortion options. If you're uncertain, it's a good idea to explore other ways to determine your gestational age. Contact us for support.
